Sometimes love shows up in the most unexpected places. For my friend James, it wasn’t a wedding, a party or even a work event. He met his fiancee (Kate) at a funeral. Yes, you read that right, at a funeral and not even the one they were supposed to attend!
It all began when James and Kate got lost on their way to the funeral of an elderly woman in her 60s. There had been three recent deaths in the village; a baby and two women, one in her 40s and the other in her 60s. James and Kate were meant to attend the funeral of the woman in her 60s but things took an unexpected turn.
Kate had gotten out of a taxi and jumped on a motorcycle to make her way to the funeral. Meanwhile, James was driving his Subaru Outback and asked for directions, he was told to follow the same route as the motorcycle Kate was on. He followed from a distance but when they arrived at the compound, something felt off. They didn’t recognize anyone there.
Both of them were there to give condolences to their mutual friend Gideon, who had lost his mother. But when they asked about Gideon, they got a surprise. The woman who had passed away had no children. Confused, Kate approached a woman sitting on the porch and asked about Gideon. The woman’s reaction was unexpected, she cried out in disbelief, saying the deceased had never gotten married and had no children.
Villagers being villagers and being straightforward, quickly informed them that they had come to the wrong funeral! They explained that there had been three deaths in the village and suggested they head East to find the correct location.
Realizing their mistake, James and Kate left together and this time in James’ car. As they drove, they properly introduced themselves and even exchanged phone numbers as they agreed that after the burial they would head back to Kampala together.
Fast forward! They are now engaged and preparing for marriage.
While most people meet in schools, restaurants, church , seminars or other typical places. James and Kate’s love story started at a funeral. Love, indeed, has a funny way of finding you; sometimes even at the wrong event!
Their story reminds us that love can show up when and where you least expect it.
Keep giving it a chance and it will find you too.
